MOVE as a Movement.

Adopting the BEAM mindset.

It’s important to keep a sense of humor about things

Living with Parkinson’s impacts your whole system from head to heart, brain to bone, and muscle to mitochondria.

Although the disease is an integral part of me now, I work mightily to not let it kill my joy, define who I am or dictate what I can do.

I view Parkinson’s as a constant companion that reminds me to stay focused on what truly matters in my life. Instead of seeing it as a movement disorder, I take it as a perpetual challenge to reorder my life priorities.

Fundamental to how I live this journey is adopting a BEAM mindset.

One of the best therapies for Parkinson’s is intentional movement and yet that is the very thing Parkinson’s disrupts: our ability to move.

For people with Parkinson’s to “keep moving” often involves a mental shift, so we have developed an approach called BEAM, based on the four elements that are essential to life.

Movement is a function of the dynamic interplay between all four elements of BEAM.

Stay balanced as best you can, energize yourself and those around you, adapt to the challenges you face, and activate your mind and body to move.

BEAM Principles

Expedition Parkimanjaro is guided by a practical interpretation of the four elements that are foundational to life.

  • We seek balance between the forces that drive change within and without by striving for dynamic stability in our biological and Earth systems.

  • We infuse ourselves and those around us with positive energy that fuels our desire to wrestle with the constraints that appear as obstacles to growth.

  • We continually adapt to changing environments, unfamiliar situations and altered circumstances as a means of surviving and thriving through personal transformation.

  • We challenge ourselves to keep moving in new directions and inspire others to engage in free flowing movement through world spaces and experiences.
